Smooth shading is not a mode you switch into. It is what you see when hand speed, needle depth, and gradual entry and exit all hold steady at once. Why chasing a smooth feeling keeps you stuck.

Occasionally, we have pop up workshops with specific topics. E.g. In 2024 we had a watercolor tattoo workshop dedicated to watercolor tattoo techniques. If you’re interested in certain topics, welcome to email us and we might open up a pop-up workshop for it!

In 2021, 2022 and 2023 we hosted Full-Stack Training — Long, constructive tattoo training from 0 to Mastering color techniques. We paused this program in 2024–2025, and it is back for 2026 — four weeks, from zero to mastering color techniques.
We take in tattoo apprentices every year, but opportunities are only opened to our students from in-person workshops. Apprenticeship Opportunities are informed together with our workshop announcements.

When you speed up your hand to feather a shading stroke, you are not feathering — you are whip shading by accident, and it leaves permanent horizontal needle marks. Here is the depth-versus-speed mechanism.
Tattoo blowouts happen when ink is deposited below the dermis. Learn the skin layers, needle depth, and 5 fixable causes.

Yes. Jing has trained 10+ tattoo apprentices at Patch Tattoo Therapy in Tarzana, and we open opportunities to new apprentices every year. Apprenticeship spots are only offered to artists who have taken our in-person classes.
Patch Tattoo Therapy is a working tattoo studio in Tarzana, Los Angeles that takes real clients. We run tattoo classes and trainings on the side mainly to get us new apprentices and artists. Every class runs inside the shop under real sanitization standards rather than in a classroom. What we teach is a structured curriculum built out of our 10+ year apprenticeship program.
All in-person classes are taught at our studio, Patch Tattoo Therapy, at 185471/2 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana, CA 91356, Los Angeles.
A traditional apprenticeship means years of unpaid shop work, where teaching happens whenever your mentor is in the mood, and most of what you pick up is by watching and guessing. Our classes compress the actual teaching into 5–30 focused days: a structured curriculum, a maximum of 10 students with at least one TA on the floor, hands-on correction and deep explanation the whole time, and a 1-on-1 session with Jing. You still get the studio environment and the direct feedback — without trading years of unpaid labor for it.
