Hands-on Tattoo Technique Trainings taught by Jing at Patch Tattoo Therapy in Tarzana, LA
We offer a variety of tattoo trainings every year, including workshops for tattoo beginners, shading fundamentals, advanced shading techniques, and color tattoo workshops. Small group, limited to 10.
Compare our In-person Workshops and Online Tattoo Courses
Our in-person tattoo training and online tattoo courses share the same curriculum and teaching approach. However, our In-person workshops have the following advantages:
- •Instant feedback and hands-on correction: Jing actively and constantly watches for bad habits or misunderstandings that’s being formed by each student — and corrects them right away.
- •Jing and her TAs are there to 1-1 answer any questions, and do targeted demos tailored to each individual student’s specific challenges, at the whole time.
- •Each workshop is limited to 10 students with at least 1 TA (experienced tattoo artist previously trained by Jing) to ensure all the students are being closely watched and helped.
- •Includes a 1-1 session with Jing to get career advice, personal style feedback, and anything you want to ask beyond the curriculum.
- •Advanced workshops, such as Advanced Sading, includes a few advanced techniques that's not in the online course, such as textures, color theory, etc. These are add-on techniques after the online course was filmed. Jing improves her coaching every year and it's first reflected in the in-person workshops.
- •Get trained in Real Tattoo Studio environment, not a classroom setting. All the workshops are hosted at Patch Tattoo Therapy, where we take in real tattoo clients, with professional and real sanitization standards.

Tattoo Workshops we Offer
Our in-person tattoo workshops vary each year, as Jing’s constantly improving each workshop by adding contents and adjusting the curriculum. Upcoming workshops are usually announced on IG @patch_tattoo_therapy, yet we generally follow a structure similar to below:
Beginner’s Tattoo Workshop
5 DaysBuilt for artists to start from zero
The same curriculum as our online training “The Ultimate Beginner’s Tattoo Course”, brought to life with in-person practice and direct feedback.
Mag Shading Fundamentals Workshop
5 DaysFor artists who have never picked up a mag, or those who have — but still struggle with their shading results.
The same curriculum as our online training “The Ultimate Tattoo Shading Course”, this workshop breaks down each shading technique and builds solid understandings and good habits for mag users.
Advanced Mag Shading Workshop
10 DaysFor artists who have never picked up a mag, or those who have — but still struggle with their shading results.
An extension of the Mag Shading Fundamentals Workshop. Same shading fundamentals for the first 5-days, then deep dive into more advanced grey-wash shading techniques:
- How to fix patchy shade
- Combining mag with round shader and liner
- Grey wash techniques
- How to shade unique textures, e.g. Metal, glass, smoke, etc.
- And more
Shading + Color Workshop
10 DaysFor artists who would like to learn using Mag techniques for color tattoos.
An extension of the Mag Shading Fundamentals Workshop. Same shading fundamentals for the first 5-days, then deep dive into advanced color techniques:
- Color theories from Basic to Advanced Level
- Color mixing and diluting skill
- Round shader, mixing shading skills and fixing skills
- Advanced Color Blending techniques
- Color on melanated skin

Pop-up Workshops
2–3 DaysOccasionally, we have pop up workshops with specific topics. E.g. In 2024 we had a watercolor tattoo workshop dedicated to watercolor tattoo techniques. If you’re interested in certain topics, welcome to email us and we might open up a pop-up workshop for it!
Full-Stack Training and Apprenticeship
4–8 weeks for the Full-Stack Training, 4–12 month training for apprentice programIn 2021, 2022 and 2023 we hosted Full-Stack Training — Long, constructive tattoo training from 0 to Mastering color techniques. We paused this program in 2024–2025 and replaced it with 5–10 days workshops. But who knows? It may come back one day :)
We take in tattoo apprentices every year, but opportunities are only opened to our students from in-person workshops. Apprenticeship Opportunities are informed together with our workshop announcements.

Workshops are usually capped at 10 students to ensure every student gets enough attention. On occasion, artists and apprentices from Patch Tattoo Therapy train alongside the group.

Yes. The core techniques from all our workshops is available as online courses, except a few advanced skills and the color theory. Online courses are accessible anytime.
